Disk Checker 3.2

Disk Checker is a full-featured disk diagnostics and repairs tool with backup ability. This program runs under Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista. Disk Checker includes two separate methods of disk checking: using file-access or direct access to disk surface.

The direct access method is much faster and is perfect for large number of small files. Disk Checker can report defective sectors numbers as well as the file name they belong to. Removable (floppy, ZIP, ORB, JAZZ, etc), hard and CD-ROM disks are supported when using direct access method (you must have administrator rights to perform hard drive checking under Windows NT/2000/XP).

For above cases as well as for remote disks, RAM disks and network drives you can also use the file-access method. You can use this program for backup purposes as well. Disk Checker can create disk images compatible with disk image files produced by other disk copy utilities (Diskcopy, WinImage, DiskDupe, etc).

Disk image is a file that contains all the disk data, such as boot sector, files and folders structure. It is possible to read and write disk images and format disk, including burning CD-ROM image .ISO files. Command line, logging and dedicated item in Windows shell context menu are supported.

FireFTP 0.97.1

Publisher's description of FireFTP

FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers. Version 0.94.2 adds the ability to keep directories in sync and greatly improved drag-and-drop support. Version 0.97.1 includes unspecified updates or bug fixing release.

Editor's review of FireFTP
Fire your old FTP client
FireFTP gives you the power of a top-notch FTP client from within your Firefox browser. It can handle multiple accounts and remember different logins, passwords, and connection settings for each. It supports authenticated TSL, authenticated SSL, and implicit SSL for secure transfers, drag and drop, and CHMOD changes. The plug-in works across platforms, lets users import and export account settings, and supports directory comparisons and synchronization, time-stamp syncing, file hashes, and auto-reconnect.

Setting up the program is as easy as using it. It's accessible either from Tools in the menu bar or you can add a FireFTP icon to the toolbar via customization options. You can also set the program to open in a new window or in a new tab, and it ran conflict-free with other major Firefox extensions like Tab Mix Plus, AdBlock Plus, or FoxyTunes.

Most surprisingly, it didn't cause any system sluggishness or freezes, nor did it instigate a massive memory leak of the kind that Firefox has become known for. There are, however, a few drawbacks. Windows Vista support has been spotty, and because of Firefox limitations, the app can't transfer files larger than 4GB, nor can it access network folders. Proxy support works for some, but not others. Despite these problems, the plug-in was stable, easy to use, and provided enough advanced features to make it worth coming back to.

Knight Online

Welcome to the world of Knight Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that utilizes a party system where you help your fellow players to advance. A prominent and exciting feature of Knight Online is the involving, persistent, large-scale war between players. Upon registering and creating your character, you must choose between two nations: El Morad, the nation of the human race, and Karus, the nation of the Orc tribes. The successful player will seek to join forces with others of his or her nation in order to obtain victory. By enduring battles, that character may also become a hero in the Knight Online World. He may also receive a title and reward from the King, become the lord of his own castle, and even rule over a city. Version 1.506 may include unspecified updates, enhancements or bug fixes.

Note: This is a very large (505MB) file and may take several hours to download via dial-up modem.

Story :
You fight with courage, you fight with honor... But why do you truly fight?

To understand our war, and why our Knights battle, we must seek the knowledge of things forgotten by most. The roots of our conflict go as deep as the very nature of the universe. The World was not always as it is today.

In the age before time as we know it, there was only the mystic void and the ancient, unformed energies. What initiated the change is beyond understanding, but the ancient energies began to gain substance. And out of this fabric of developing substance, a thread, a very special power, gained consciousness.

Logos was this being, and his impulse was to create a reflection of himself. It was he who shaped what would become the world of Carnac with its tall mountains, deep valleys and blue skies. Logos conjured water to carve the rocks, flood the valleys and fill the oceans. Soon the world was marvelous, like a turquoise jewel hanging in the mystic void. Logos was not satisfied, however. He felt that there must be others to experience the splendors of the rivers, oceans and lakes. The rocks and mountains were grand, but lifeless. [ Read more ]

Why let Mac users have all the fun?
Giving WinZip a run for its money, StuffIt Standard offers effortless file compression and encryption for any type of file. It matches WinZip in several features, including archived password protection, right-click compression, and a gallery of easy-to-use wizards. The utility also comes with a few unique features, including a robust search tool that locates files by date, type, size, and compression format. For others to decompress native StuffIt files, they'll either need the free StuffIt Expander utility or they'll be presented with a self-extracting archive, which adds to the overall file size. WarRock

WarRock is a frenetic first-person shooter MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). You can play one of five soldiers: engineer, assault, sniper, heavy artillery, or medic (the only female). You must choose an environment before a character. There are about a dozen landscapes, and they are applied to close combat, urban ops and battle group scenarios; the last one allowing you to drive everything from motorcycles to tanks to helicopters. Without a doubt, this game should appeal to those into modern military strategy and fighting.

WarRock's Web site, where you need to register before playing, is easy to navigate and mandatory to look at so you can understand how to play. No patches and a smooth setup make for a pleasant installation experience. Unfortunately, there have been numerous user complaints that if you don't live on a continent that has one of WarRock's servers, then it won't let you connect.

It's hard to understate how quickly things happen in this game; changing your POV is difficult, so it's easy to get shot in the back. All the battles feature two teams, and you're randomly assigned when you join the game in progress. There aren't cheaters, as you might find in other MMORPGs, but there are very testy game-players who aren't shy about voting you out if you're slowing down their team's inexorable march to victory.

Publisher's description of WarRock
War Rock is a free massively multiplayer online, modern tactical first person shooter (FPS) where players have the option to purchase a wide variety of gameplay enhancing items, services, and products or play the game as it is without ever paying a dime. Little Fighter

Little Fighter 2 (LF2) is a popular freeware fighting game for Windows. LF2 was created by Marti Wong and Starsky Wong in 1999. Its popularity has been substantial thanks to its simple yet addictive gameplay, its great replay ability and free at the point of use availability. The game can have up to 4 human players on one computer and 8 characters in network play at one time. Game modes include VS mode, Stage mode (where 1 or more players move through the environment killing increasing numbers and difficulties of enemies), Championship mode and Battle mode (involving mass armies led by a player).

Version 1.9c may include unspecified updates, enhancements or bug fixes.
Editor's review of Little Fighter 2
For fast play in a Street Fighter-style environment, Little Fighter seems to have punched and kicked its way to the top. Fitting in with its retro feel, you play a small character with a big head--reminiscent of the Japanese "chibi" designs--and fight against the computer or a friend, one-on-one or in a melee.
The control keys are simple and customizable to your preferences, but it's not a hard game to learn. You can move up, down, left and right; you can attack, defend and jump. That's it. No more, no less, and yet some users claim that Little Fighter can suck them in for hours at time. You also can have up to four people playing off the same keyboard simultaneously--a charmingly quaint touch.
The English translation of the game leaves more than a little to be desired, so it will take some messing around to understand how it works. We found the Web site to be unhelpful, but reprogramming the keys to ones we were comfortable with made everything easier. The game is also slow to load at times, but we can see how Little Fighter can get addictive in a big way.

Compressor comparison

Believe it or not, something can be too big. A monster truck can be difficult if not impossible to park. A retro-appeal boom box weighing down your shoulder may give you back problems. And all those files you don't want to delete are sucking up space on your hard drive. Up-and-comer WinRAR 3.2 dukes it out with old-school champion WinZip 8.1 for a shot at the title of best compression utility to help you squeeze down your extraneous files and lighten you up. And who couldn't use a little help getting rid of those excess pounds?
Interface
Both of our compression-utility heavyweights hit the mat with proven records, but champion WinZip has history and ring presence to spare. Both sport slightly cartoony icon-driven menus in their main interfaces, with challenger WinRAR's integrated file explorer racking a slight lead for ease of use. Defender WinZip tries to earn some usability points with features such as drag-and-drop file handling from Windows Explorer (also present in WinRAR) and an interface control that remembers whether you prefer to use the Wizard or Classic interface. Each program's zipping wizards earn points for easy archiving, with WinRAR pulling ahead by offering more compression options. But WinZip counterpunches with an integrated e-mail option and file management settings built in to the wizard.
Functionality
Though both WinZip and WinRAR are featherweights, at 4.11MB and 2.65MB respectively, slightly lighter WinRAR manages to pack more of a punch in basic compression, letting you choose from ZIP or slightly more efficient RAR archives for packing. The throw-down starts in the unpacking ring, with both supporting ARJ, CAB, GZ, LZH, TAR, UUE, and ZIP formats, and then mixing up the alphabet soup with slightly older formats such as ARC, B64, BHX, HQX, MIM, TAZ, TGZ, TZ, UU, XXE, and Z supported in the WinZip camp, and ACE, BZ2, JAR, ISO, and of course, RAR, supported by WinRAR. Both exhibit great speed in packing, but WinZip is the hands-down winner on this score, zipping up archives like nobody's business, compared with more lethargic WinRAR. Why pack at all? The savings in size of course, and that's where things in the match-up got interesting. For picture-heavy and layout files you won't see substantial differences in RAR and ZIP archives, but for text, music, and program files, RAR archives came in about 10 percent lighter, which in MBs adds up fast.
Features
Both WinZip and WinRAR bring features into the ring that will please even demanding archivists. Core functions are a right-click away from anywhere in Windows, and each can create self-extracting archives. For less demanding users, both contenders' wizards are speedy and flexible enough to keep you from diving into the full programs. WinZip boasts easy integration of virus scanning programs, sadly lacking in WinRAR. But WinRAR fights back with a data-recovery feature for damaged files, better file-naming options, and optional locking of archives to prevent accidental modifications. Our luchadores step it up for bigger files and file sets: WinRAR takes on WinZip's cumbersome but effective Span Disk archives for behemoth multidisk archiving with its easy-to-use RAR volumes. WinZip lands a decisive counterpunch with easy splitting of large-size archives for easier e-mailing.
Stability
Starting strong out of their corners, both WinRAR and WinZip install flawlessly and go where you tell them. As you would expect from an old pro with this many years in the ring, WinZip gets down to brass tacks with a no-fuss wizard-style installation that requires only minimal pointing and clicking before it's cracking its knuckles and ready to crunch files. WinRAR's equally muscular and customizable setup lets you control integration with windows, easily associating file types and controlling context menus, all with quick linkage to help for exploring your options. These fighters also quit the ring cleanly, packing complete uninstallers for when the fight is over.
Demo
Both of these heavyweight full-program demos behaved like real sportsmen, limiting their aggression to file packing and letting the trial period lapse without the programs becoming inoperable. WinZip is marginally more annoying on the demo score, employing the ugly splash screen each time the program sauntered into the ring throughout its 29-day trial period and beyond. Gentleman fighter WinRAR only made its more demure nag screen pitch after the bell rang on its 30-day run, taking the way of the samurai.
The winner
The judges are split, and no amount of behind-the-scenes cash exchange is going to fix it. Long-time title holder WinZip is the popular favorite for its lightening-fast reflexes, easy handling, and sheer ubiquity, but it won't be holding a championship belt above its head while it's staggering around the ring holding its cup from the compression-ratio blows delivered by up-and-comer WinRAR and its stable of newer archive formats.

Although iTunes has always been one of the best pieces of jukebox software available, the company improved upon a great thing with version 7, which has added enhanced video capabilities, ringtone editing for the iPhone and new ways to view your music library.
A cleaned-up left sidebar makes finding your music and videos a snap and the new Album and Cover-Flow view options let you flip through CDs in style. The built-in video player accommodates both your own files and ones bought at the iTunes Store. Right-clicking a clip lets you render it iPod-compatible. With the addition of full-length movies at the iTunes Store, you can now view near-DVD quality movies at a resolution of 640x480.
The experience of both purchasing and playing movies and videos is almost identical to performing the same actions with music, so seasoned users will have no trouble. Old popular features remain intact including seamless iPod integration, smart playlists, CD burning, label printing, the ability to rip files in multiple formats (except WMA), network sharing, and, of course, the enormously successful iTunes Store.
The iTunes Store also offers DRM-free, higher sound quality songs, but they're more expensive than the standard $0.99, as are ringtones.
Rounding out the feature set are parental controls, integrated podcasts, and a smart-shuffle option. iTunes is sometimes clunky on Windows, and can cause significant processor slowdowns. Still, it remains a top-notch player and iTunes 7 should find a home on any media junkie's computer.

Spyware Doctor® 5.1 for Windows®

Spyware Doctor is an advanced spyware removal utility that detects and cleans thousands of potential spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers and tracking threats from your PC.

When you consider the amount of valuable personal information stored on your PC, including credit card and banking details, personal e-mails and documents, shopping and browsing habits, the risks of having software intruders become obvious. Known consequences of spyware and adware include identity theft, computer problems, slow Internet access, changed homepage and favorites, and excessive numbers of pop-up adverts.

Anti-virus software and firewalls do not fully protect your system against the majority of spyware and privacy threats.

Spyware is commonly bundled with software downloads, attached to e-mails, or transmitted through networks so it can appear to be legitimate software but once installed it can be nearly impossible to detect and remove without the help of a dedicated spyware removal tool like Spyware Doctor. Spyware protection should be an essential part of your protection to defend your privacy and computing habits from prying eyes and virtual trespassers.

Main Features: - Detects and remove spyware, adware, malware, Trojans, keyloggers and trackware - "OnGuard" continuously monitors and protects your PC from browser infections and tracking cookies - Immunize your system to protect against hundreds of known web-browser hijackers (BHO) and ActiveX threats - Receive timely live updates of new threats as they become available - Customized and deep scans allow you to thoroughly check your PC for infections - Ability to quarantine and undo items that have been removed

Note:Spyware Doctor is free to try, but uses a "pay to remove" model. It will however show you the name, type, location and other information aboout any infection.
